Councils should ‘focus on small business rather than politics’ for Australia Day – Sky News Australia

Commercial litigator Caroline Di Russo says local councils should be focussed on small businesses thriving rather than making a political point amid news the federal government put out a warning to councils planning to can Australia Day festivities. It comes after a growing number of local government areas indicated they would can Australia Day festivities, prompting the Morrison government to demand in-person citizenship ceremonies to proceed. Discussing one particular council in Western Australia which generally scraps Australia Day events, Ms Di Russo said it should “have as many people and as many events going on” as possible. “Whatever businesses have survived can at least make the most of that long weekend,” she told Sky News host Chris Smith. “Not focussing on making some silly political point.”
